why a share picture is worth five minutes
a link with a picture takes up more of the screen
In a feed, a link without a picture is one line of text between other posts. The same link with a large card fills the width of the post. You are not competing on what your page says at that point. You are competing on whether anyone notices it scroll past, and a picture is what gets noticed.
it tells people what the page is before they read anything
A good share picture is a headline people take in at a glance. Someone scrolling quickly will read four large words on a picture and skip a paragraph of text underneath. If the picture says what your product does, the click you get is from someone who already knows what they are clicking on.
without one, the network chooses for you
If your page names no picture, some networks show nothing and others grab the first image they find: a logo cropped in half, an icon, a random screenshot. It is rarely what you would have picked. Naming one picture yourself, at the right size, takes the choice back.
what makes a good one
Few words, set large. A title that still reads at the size of a phone screen. Strong contrast between the words and the background. Your name or logo small in a corner, so people learn where it came from. And everything important kept away from the edges, since some apps crop the picture slightly.
one for each page beats one for the whole site
A single picture for your home page is the minimum. But a blog post shared with its own title on the picture, or a launch page with the product's name, does better than the same generic image on every link. That is why this tool is quick to use again: change the title, download, done.
questions
Is there a watermark?
No. The picture is yours, with nothing of ours on it.
Is my logo uploaded anywhere?
No. The picture is drawn on your own device and the logo never leaves it. That is also why the tool works the moment you type.
What size is the picture?
1200 by 630 pixels, a PNG. That is the size recommended for og:image and the one X shows full width with a large card.
How do I add it to my site?
Put the file on your website, then add the tags shown under the download button to the head of your page, with the full address of the picture. After that, the link preview checker will show you the result.
Can I make one for every page?
Yes, as many as you like. Blog posts and launch pages do well with a picture of their own that carries the page's title.
