what goes into the draft
- your site's name as the heading
- a one or two sentence summary, from your own description
- your main pages, each with its title and what it is about
- pages grouped by section, such as blog or docs
- legal pages set apart under "optional"
- sign-in, cart and admin pages left out
what llms.txt is, and why it is worth having
people now ask an assistant before they search
A growing share of "what is the best tool for this" questions go to ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity or an AI summary at the top of a search page. Those answers are put together from what the assistant can read about you. If your site is hard for it to make sense of, you are simply not part of the answer.
what the file is
llms.txt is a plain text file at the root of your site, written in simple Markdown: a heading with your name, a short summary, and a list of your most important pages with a line about each. It is a proposal, set out at llmstxt.org, for giving language models a short, clean map of a site instead of making them dig through menus, scripts and cookie banners.
what it can and can not do
It is not an official standard, and no assistant has promised to read it. Some tools and crawlers do, and adoption is growing, but nobody can tell you it will change your ranking in an AI answer. What it costs is a few minutes and one small file, and it can not hurt. Treat it as a cheap bet, not a guarantee.
why it helps even if no assistant reads it
Writing it makes you say, in two sentences, what your site is and which pages matter. Most sites have never written that down. If the summary this tool drafts for you is vague, it is because your own description tag is vague, and that is the same text search engines and link previews show to people.
how it sits next to robots.txt and your sitemap
robots.txt tells crawlers where they may go. A sitemap lists every page for search engines. llms.txt is neither: it is a short reading list, in your own words, of the pages that explain what you do. Keep it small. Ten good lines are more useful to a reader, human or not, than five hundred addresses.
questions
What is llms.txt?
A plain text file at yoursite.com/llms.txt that describes your site and lists its main pages in Markdown, so AI assistants can understand it quickly. The format was proposed at llmstxt.org.
Do AI assistants really use it?
Some tools and crawlers read it, and more sites publish one every month, but it is a proposal, not a standard, and no major assistant has committed to using it. It is a low-cost thing to add, not a guaranteed result.
Where do I put the file?
At the root of your website, so it opens at yoursite.com/llms.txt, served as plain text. On most hosts that means dropping the file into your public or static folder.
How does the generator decide which pages to list?
It takes the pages your home page links to, then adds pages from your sitemap, shallow ones first. Sign-in, cart, admin and file addresses are left out. It lists up to 60 and opens a few of them to read their own titles and descriptions.
Should I edit the draft?
Yes. The draft is only as good as the titles and descriptions already on your pages. Rewrite the summary in your own words, remove pages that do not explain your product, and keep the list short.
