fix the tags
a list of every tag we found and the ones that are missing.
the tags it reads
- og:title, og:description, og:image, og:url, og:type and og:site_name
- twitter:card, twitter:title, twitter:description, twitter:image and twitter:site
- the page's own title and description, which networks fall back to
- whether the picture really loads, and its width and height
- the canonical address and the tab icon
why your link preview matters
the card is the first thing people see
When your link is posted on X, sent in Slack or dropped into a group chat, nobody sees your website yet. They see a small card: a picture, a title and a line of text. That card is where they decide whether to click. A link with a clear picture and a plain title looks like something finished. A bare address with no preview looks like something that is not.
every network builds it from the same few tags
X, LinkedIn, Slack, Discord, WhatsApp and iMessage all read the Open Graph tags in the head of your page: og:title, og:description and og:image. X adds a few of its own, starting with twitter:card. Get those right once and your link looks right everywhere. Leave them out and each network guesses, and they guess differently.
you can not see it until it is shared, and then it is public
There is no preview of your preview in the browser. The first time most founders see their card is in their own launch post, with the wrong picture or none at all. Networks also keep a copy of the card, so even after you fix the tags the old one can keep showing for a while. Checking before you post is the only way to get it right the first time.
launch sites read these tags too
When you submit a product to a launch site, many of them fill in your name, logo and description from the same tags. ShipDesk.dev does this when you paste your website. A page with a clear title, a real description and a working picture launches in a minute. A page without them means typing everything by hand, and a first impression you had to patch.
what a good preview looks like
A picture at 1200 by 630 that says what the page is in a few large words. A title under about 60 characters with the important part first. A description of one or two sentences that tells a stranger what they get. And twitter:card set to summary_large_image, so X shows the picture full width instead of as a small square.
questions
What is an OG image?
It is the picture a page names in its og:image tag. When someone shares the link, X, LinkedIn, Slack, WhatsApp and most other apps show that picture in the preview card. Without one, the link is shared as plain text.
What size should the share picture be?
1200 by 630 pixels works everywhere. It is shown full width on X when twitter:card is set to summary_large_image, and LinkedIn and Slack use the same shape.
I changed my picture but the old one still shows. Why?
Networks keep a copy of your card. X and LinkedIn refresh it after a while, and LinkedIn has a post inspector that fetches it again. This tool always reads your live page, so what you see here is what a fresh share will get.
Why is my picture not showing at all?
The usual causes are an address that is not a full https link, a picture that needs a login or blocks robots, or a page drawn by scripts so the tags are not in the first response. The tag list below the previews shows which it is.
Do I need Twitter tags if I have Open Graph tags?
X falls back to your Open Graph title, description and picture. The one tag worth adding is twitter:card with the value summary_large_image, which makes the picture show at full width.
